Approximately 70 years ago, on January 30, 1950, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, more commonly known as the Soviet Union, became one of the first countries globally to recognize and formally established diplomatic ties with Vietnam, demonstrating the strong solidarity that the Soviet Union felt for the just cause of the Vietnamese people.

This seismic event had an important impact on boosting the recognition given by a number of countries worldwide with regard to the relationship between both countries, whilst providing Vietnam with a legal status in international relations and creating favourable conditions in the nation’s struggle for independence and freedom.

In the subsequent seven decades that followed, citizens of both nations have always stood side by side in struggles for national liberation and construction. Due to the great support offered by the Soviet Union in terms of both human and material resources, Vietnam managed to develop from an outdated agricultural country into one that boasts modern economic sectors, such as hydroelectricity, oil, and gas, all in a short space of time.

Looking back at these milestones can be considered a step in strengthening and developing the time-honoured friendship, with the leaders of the two nations deciding to organise events such as "The Vietnam Year in Russia" and " The Russia Year in Vietnam”. This has been done alongside a broad range of activities aimed celebrating the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the partners.

Nguyen Ngoc Binh, Chairman of the Da Nang City Union of Friendship Organizations, affirmed that the organisation of the seminar and the opening of the photo exhibition indicates there is a great desire to look back at the history of diplomatic relations and learn about the many difficulties and challenges that signify the time-honoured friendship.

The launch of such events is viewed as a means of contributing to strengthening and developing ties of friendship and co-operation between the two countries, an aspect that serves as an invaluable asset that must be respected, preserved, and promoted.

In his address, Plam Andrei Yurievich, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Danang City, affirmed that the nation is one of the three most important strategic partners that Russia has in all of Asia. The standard bearer of co-operation between the two countries is Vietsovpetro Joint Venture, a firm which provides one third of the volume of exploited crude oil in Vietnam.

According to the agreement reached by senior leaders last year, there are 100 events to be launched with the aim of promoting co-operation in the fields of economics, commerce, military, military engineering, science and technology, and co-operation development at a local level. The Russian side is also promoting Vietnam's images as a popular destination for Russian citizens.

At present, both the Russian Federation and Vietnam are keen to develop co-operative relations based on mutual benefits, a traditional friendship, and mutual trust whose foundations were laid in the previous century. Further deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership with the nation is one of the key directions of Russian foreign policy, the Russian diplomat said.
