At a June 2 reception for visiting Swiss Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter in Hanoi, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai welcomed Switzerland’s decision to open its Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City – Vietnam’s most dynamically developed economic hub.
In this spirit, Deputy PM suggested Switzerland promote trade exchange and accelerate the implementation of ODA and FDI projects in Vietnam and the negotiation on the free trade agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) on the basis of ensuring the balance, high standards and taking into account the disparity in development levels between Vietnam and EFTA members.
For his part, Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter confirmed his nation’s desire to step up all-round cooperation with Vietnam, describing the opening of a Swiss Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City as a testament to the respect, while Switzerland is reducing the number of diplomatic agencies abroad.
Switzerland supports Vietnam’s deep global economic integration, including the signing of free trade agreements (FTAs).
At the meeting, host and guest also exchanged views on a number of regional issues of shared concern and joint cooperation of many countries affected by the complicated situation in the East Sea.
They affirmed both Vietnam and Switzerland’s common stance on the need to respect international law, the Code of Conduct and ensure maximum freedom of maritime security, aviation security in the East Sea- a trade route crucial to the world.
