|PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc (R) appreciates outgoing WB Country Director for Vietnam Ousmane Dione's substantial contributions to Vietnam's development during his working term
The WB has made substantial contributions to Vietnam’s development, especially through its funded projects on poverty reduction, loan provision, and technical consultations in finance and banking sectors, said PM Phuc.
He described Ousmane Dione as a close and talented friend of Vietnam who has impressively contributed to the relations between Vietnam and the WB.
He thanked the WB for its timely assistance to Vietnam’s fight against the novel coronavirus, saying Vietnam has brought the epidemic under control and entered the new normal phase.
For his part, Ousmane Dione congratulated Vietnam on its initial success in combating the COVID-19 epidemic, becoming an exemplary role model for other countries to follow suit.
He said he was delighted that some of the World Bank's policy recommendations had been accepted by the Vietnamese Government, and that it is high time for Vietnam to seize the opportunity to recover from COVID-19.
Impressed by Vietnam’s development during the his past four year working term, Dione expressed his belief that the goal of turning Vietnam into a middle-income nation is not too far to reach and that in its 2021-2025 socio-economic development Vietnam should work out measures to realize that goal.
Vietnam should accelerate digital transformation, improve the quality of public services, and increase the operational efficiency of the State apparatus, the WB director said.
PM Phuc thanked the WB Country Director for his good assessment of Vietnam, noting in recent years the Government of Vietnam has made efforts to perfect the legal framework on public investment and public debt management, aimed at mobilizing and utilizing foreign loans effectively and transparently.
He said he has assigned the Ministry of Planning and Investment to formulate socio-economic development orientations for the 2021-2025 period based on which ministries and the World Bank will select specific assistance programs and projects, thus promoting bilateral cooperation.
PM Phuc expressed hope that Ousmane Dione, in his capacity as the WB Country Director of four African nations in the time to come, will help Vietnamese commodities penetrate deep into the African market.
