First meeting of ASEAN Committee in New York

VOV.VN - Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Head of the Vietnamese permanent mission to the United Nations (UN), on January 10, chaired the first meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Committee was held in New York on January 10, discussing activities and priorities of ASEAN member states this year.

Countries affirmed their support for Vietnam when it shoulders successfully the role of ASEAN Chairmanship in 2020 and United Nations Security Council (UNSC)’s Presidency in January 2020.

They consented to continue promoting the image and active engagement of ASEAN in the UN.

Participating nations showed appreciation for Vietnam’s initiative in holding a meeting on cooperation between ASEAN and the UN in maintaining international peace and security for the first time in January 2020.

They agreed to continue implementing traditional activities of ASEAN Committee such as the ASEAN Family Day and ASEAN Day to reinforce solidarity between member countries as well as promote cooperation and friendship between ASEAN and partners.

While sharing about priorities in 2020, countries said they will accelerate the implementation of the UN sustainable development goals as well as the supplementation between the UN Agenda 2030 and ASEAN Vision 2025.

A string of activities are due to be held in 2020, including the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the UN and the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action on gender equality and women empowerment.
