Deputy PM meets Myanmar, India diplomats

(VOV) - Deputy Prime Minister cum Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh had separate meetings with Myanmar Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin and India Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM) in Myanmar on August 9.

At a meeting with FM Wunna Maung Lwin, the two diplomats noted with satisfaction the fine development of Vietnam-Myanmar relations, and agreed to increase delegation exchanges, including the upcoming visit to Vietnam by the head of the Myanmar parliament.

They also agreed to soon conduct the 7th political consultation and the 8th Vietnam-Myanmar Joint Committee meeting in Myanmar, along with the establishment of a dialogue mechanism for national defence policy and a joint working group between the two Defence Ministries.

FM Minh underlined the need for the two sides to increase cooperation in economics, trade, and investment, and proposed that Myanmar create favourable conditions for Vietnamese businesses to operate in its territory.

He highly valued Myanmar’s ASEAN Presidency role in finding common ground for key security issues in the region, and pledged to work closely with Myanmar in fulfilling its role in 2014.

At another meeting with Sushma Swaraj, the two FMs stressed for a substantial change in the strategic partnership between Vietnam and India through the exchange of high-level delegations.

They agreed to strengthen economic and trade cooperation to raise bilateral trade value to US$7 billion in 2015 and US$15 billion in 2020.

Sushma Swaraj reaffirmed that Vietnam holds an important role in India’s Look East policy.
