Responsibility and confidence
Vietnam’s revolutionary press has long won pubic confidence. During the current information boom, the press plays a very important role in imparting information and creating a social consensus.
Every journalist needs to learn and practice constantly to fulfill their communication tasks.
Vietnam now has nearly 750 media agencies that produce more than 1,000 publications; 67 radio and televisions stations with 200 domestic channels, and 67 international channels that are broadcast on pay-TV networks.
There are also 46 online newspapers and magazines and nearly 290 websites run by media agencies as well as thousands of other websites providing information from Party and State agencies, unions, social organizations, associations and businesses.
These figures show the strong development of the media in Vietnam, providing the public with many options regarding ways to approach to information. This poses tough competition between the different forms of media and between media agencies. Every true journalist needs to reflect all areas of society.
The press is a useful information channel for people from all walks of life because everyone, from businesspeople to senior leaders can obtain updated information in many fields via the press channels. International friends all over the world learn information about Vietnam primarily through the press. This is the great pride of more than 17,000 journalists across the country and also a source of motivation for their career and creativity.
In order to produce accurate information for the public, they have to work hard using their brainpower, sweats and even tears. Journalists take a heavy social responsibility because only they fully understand the impact of the information they report to the public.
Hundreds of journalists have not shield away from difficulties and hardship to visit soldiers on-duty, fishermen at sea or go to areas hit by natural disasters to report on the dangers and hard lives of the people. Many journalists have also dared to expose negative events or corruption to protect the legal rights of the State and people regardless of danger, threats and assaults.
In major national events, journalists act as a bridge, connecting essential information to the public far and wide. They are always ready to go to wherever the action is.
“The press is a reliable forum of the people”; “The press is an important information channel to combat corruption and honour exemplary role models”; “The press goes along with businesses”; “The press brings Vietnam’s image to the world”; “The press makes notable contributions to the country’s achievements”. These are some of positive statements about Vietnam’s revolutionary press in recognition of its significant contributions to national construction and defense.
However, some journalists are still irresponsible for the information they report which has affected the legitimate interests of the pubic and businesses.
Still worse, some have also violated professional ethnics and the law, and suffered the due punishment.
The more society develops, the more important the press becomes, requiring every journalist to learn continually to broaden their knowledge and assume social responsibility to be worthy of the love and confidence of the people.
