Malaysia arrests 14 suspected IS members

The Malaysian police arrested 14 suspected Islamic State (IS) militants during a series of raids in several states from May 17-20.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Noor Rashid Ibrahim said in a statement that eight of the suspects have been linked to channeling funds to IS and the Abu Sayyaf militant group in the southern Philippines.

They were tied to Muhammad Wanndy Mohamed Jedi, a Malaysian militant in Syria who has been actively recruiting IS members.
Others were arrested for promoting IS ideology or planning joining IS in Syria, he added.

Malaysia has been put on high alert since IS rebels conducted attacks in Jakarta, Indonesia – the neibouring country of Malaysia, in January this year.

Malaysian Home Minister Ahmad Zahid revealed in March that the local police foiled a plot by local IS operatives to kidnap Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and several ministers of the country last year.
