Chile, Egypt, Morocco sign ASEAN amity, cooperation treaty

Chile, Egypt and Morocco on September 6 signed the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), bringing the number of signatory countries to 35.

The deal came on the occasion of the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits and related summits that began in the Lao capital city of Vientiane the same day.

The treaty, which came into force in 1976, was forged by members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to promote peace and stability.

Countries outside the region can engage in the treaty if allowed by ASEAN member countries.

ASEAN foreign ministers agreed at their 49th ministerial meeting in July to accept the three countries in the treaty.

ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
