USS George Washington crew explores Da Nang during Vietnam visit
VOV.VN - Nearly 1,000 sailors, officers and crew members from the USS George Washington carrier strike group have taken part in cultural, culinary and sightseeing activities in Da Nang as part of the US Navy's official visit to Vietnam.
According to Visit Indochina Travel, the company organising the programme, the tours were held from July 30 to August 5 and were designed to introduce participants to the history, culture and everyday life of the central coastal city.
Members of the carrier strike group visited some of Da Nang's best-known attractions, including the Marble Mountains, Hai Van Gate, Ba Na Hills, the city centre, traditional markets and Nam O fish sauce village.
In addition to sightseeing, many sailors spent time experiencing local daily life by visiting neighbourhood cafés, exploring traditional markets, shopping and interacting with local residents.
The visitors also sampled regional specialties such as Mi Quang (Quang-style noodles), banh xeo (Vietnamese savory pancakes), salted coffee and coconut ice cream.
Many participants said they were impressed by the friendliness of local residents as well as Da Nang's distinctive cuisine and culture.
According to Nguyen Son Thuy, director of Visit Indochina Travel, the programme was developed around the immersive travel concept "Back to the Authentic," allowing visitors to experience firsthand the city's cultural values, culinary traditions and everyday lifestyle.
The US Navy aircraft carrier USS George Washington docked at Da Nang Bay on July 30, beginning a port visit to Da Nang city.
The visiting naval group also includes the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls (CG-62) and the guided-missile destroyer USS Shoup (DDG-86).
During the visit, the commanding officers paid courtesy calls on leaders of the Da Nang People's Committee and the Vietnam People's Navy's Region 3 Command.
Crew members also took part in cultural, sports and English-language exchange activities, as well as visiting and donating gifts to a local children's care centre.
