Tourists to Phu Quoc surge despite low season

VOV.VN - The number of visitors to Phu Quoc island city in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang has increased sharply over recent months despite the city entering a lull in the tourist season due to heavy rains.

According to statistics compiled by the Kien Giang Department of Tourism, the locality welcomed more than 2.8 million visitors during the five months of the year, making up over 50% of the annual plan and earning a tourism revenue of more than VND 2,200 billion.

Most notably, during national holidays such as National Reunification Day on April 30 and May Day on May 1, the province received over 296,000 visitors, a rise of 167.7% against the same period from last year.

According to a study conducted by Vietravel Airlines, the Ho Chi Minh City - Phu Quoc air route attracts the majority of visitors in the summer, with the occupancy rate reaching over 80% from May to August.

Vu Tien Van, CEO of Dai Viet International Trading and Service Joint Stock Company (Adavigo), revealed that the company has established three branches in the island city which is widely viewed as a safe and stable destination to welcome visitors all year round.

Since October of last year tourists have flocked to Phu Quoc, with numbers not dropping until recently. Indeed, many people have booked trips for the entire duration July and August, Tien noted.

Dinh Thi Thu Thao, sales director of Mustgo Travel Company, attributed Phu Quoc’s attraction to the involvement of large corporations such as Sun Group and Vingroup, particularly as they boast entertainment sites such as Sun World Hon Thom Nature Park Marine Entertainment Complex and Phu Quoc United Center. This is in addition to a series of leading global resort brands such as Intercontinental, Regent, Radisson Blu, and Sol by Melia.

Despite individual tourists forecast to suffer a fall, international visitors and MICE groups are anticipated to bounce back moving forward, according to insiders.
