20 international airlines keen to launch air routes to Phu Quoc

VOV.VN - Up to 20 international airlines are actively seeking to open air services to Phu Quoc island in the southern province of Kien Giang.

This information was unveiled during a recent meeting held between local authorities and a delegation of the Committee of the Vietnam Aviation Association, a group which wants to explore development opportunities and launch air routes both to and from Phu Quoc moving forward.

The reception saw Huynh Quang Hung, chairman of Phu Quoc City People's Committee, emphasise that Phu Quoc remains a popular tourism destination for both domestic and international travel companies, noting that the city has been granted approval by the Prime Minister to become a national tourist hub of regional and international stature.

Nguyen Minh Dong, director of Phu Quoc International Airport, said that further investment will be made as part of efforts to build an additional international terminal, cargo terminal, warehouse, and runway for the airport over the coming years to serve up to ten million passengers a year.

Furthermore, representatives from 20 international airlines operating in the nation expressed their desire to launch air routes to and from Phu Quoc, as well as gaining greater insights into the Phu Quoc International Airport’s capability to accommodate large aircraft and the issuance of visas for foreign tourist.

Philip Claud Odhiambo Ojuang, chairman of the Committee of the Vietnam Aviation Association, highlighted the vision of leaders from Phu Quoc as being a driving force to create favourable conditions to turn the island into a popular destination.

He expressed his wish that local authorities speed up the visa exemption synchronously among domestic airports in a bid to facilitate tourists’ travel in the future.

Phu Quoc International Airport currently makes up one of the five airports which receives the largest amount of passengers among the nation’s 29 airports.
