Crab and crustacean exports increase sharply

VOV.VN - Crab and crustacean exports to foreign markets surged 46.3% to US$578.4 million in January compared to last year’s corresponding period, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

VASEP said tuna exports increased by 11% to US$36.8 million, while other kinds of fish rose 32.2% to US$105.9 million. Octopus and cuttlefish also saw a rise of 9.8% to US$38.4 million while crab and crustacean exports increased remarkably by 46.3% to US$13 million.

Tra fish exports also went up 8.3% to US$149.3 million. However, tra fish is predicted to fall gradually this year as the result of a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) inspection program.

The program will become effective in March 2016, 90 days after it was first published in the Federal Register and is expected to negatively impact Vietnamese tra catfish exports to the US market.

In January alone, seafood exports to ASEAN, the US, the Republic of Korea, China and Hong Kong soared 12% to 41.6%. On the contrary, seafood exports to Canada, Taiwan and Mexico dropped significantly to 37.7%.
