Young boxers head to Asian U19, U23 Championships in Indonesia
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s youth boxing team departed for Indonesia on July 2 to compete in the Asian U19 & U23 Boxing Championships 2026 set to take place in Jakarta, Indonesia, from July 4 to 16.
Vietnam fielded 20 boxers, including several promising players who have impressed at domestic and regional tournaments. Among them, Ngo Ngoc Linh Chi and Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tran are regarded as the leading medal contenders.
In the 48kg weight class, Linh Chi won a gold medal at the national youth championships, reached the final of the 2024 Asian Boxing Championships, and represented Vietnam at the 2025 IBA World Championships. Meanwhile, Ngoc Tran took a gold medal in the 50kg weight class at the Asian Youth Championships last year and secured a gold medal at the Asian U22 Championships.
The coaching staff said both the men’s and women’s squads had completed their preparations and were in good form ahead of the championships. They expressed confidence that the athletes would perform to their full potential.
Vietnam aims to win medals at this year's tournament after several of its young boxers produced encouraging performances at the 2026 Youth Olympic boxing qualifiers in March. Le Thi Quynh Anh and Dam Thi Mai Anh were among those who reached the semi-finals, while qualification places for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games are still awaiting confirmation from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The tournament will feature competition across 10 weight classes each for U19 men, U19 women, U23 men, and U23 women. It will last through to July 16.
