VN weightlifters target two golds at SEA Games 31
VOV.VN - The Vietnamese weightlifting team aim to win two gold medals at the upcoming 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) due to take place in Vietnam from May 12 to May 23.
The target is rather low compared to the four gold medals that Vietnamese weightlifters recorded at the SEA Games 30.
According to experts, Hoang Thi Duyen who grabbed a gold in the Philippines three years ago has yet to fully recover ahead of this year’s competition, while hopefuls Vuong Thi Huyen who also snatched a gold in 2019 and Thach Kim Tuan will also be absent for individual reasons.
As a result, many pundits believe that Lai Gia Thanh and Pham Thi Hong Thanh - the two SEA Games 30 gold medalists - are now the country’s best hopes of winning gold medals in the event.
Despite facing strong opponents from Thailand and Malaysia who are allowed to compete again after a doping ban, Vietnamese weightlifters go into the sporting event with great confidence.
Gia Thanh said his current performance is better now and he would strive to defend the title this time
Athletes from 11 national weightlifting teams are scheduled to compete at Hanoi Sports Training and Competition Centre in the capital from May 19 to May 22.
