Vietnam’s U18s enjoy 1-0 win over Malaysia at AFF Championship
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s U18 national football team were able to see off their Malaysian rivals 1-0 in the opening match of Group B at the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) U18 Championship-Next Media Cup 2019 which took place at the Thong Nhat stadium in Ho Chi Minh City on August 7.
With the advantage of playing at home, head coach Hoang Anh Tuan saw his side dominate the game.
Bui Tien Sinh and Tran Manh Quynh were able to create a number of chances that threatened Malaysia’s defence. Despite this, the Vietnamese players missed a lot of opportunities and went in goalless at half time.
Vietnam nearly went ahead immediately after the break as Vo Nguyen Hoang was denied by an excellent save from the Malaysian goalkeeper.
Malaysia’s only chance of the game came in the 72nd minute but they were unable to convert it.
It wasn’t until the 89th minute that the breakthrough came as a corner kick by Vietnam’s last substitute Vo Minh Trong caused panic in the Malaysian defence, causing a defender to slice the ball into his own net, ultimately handing Vietnam a 1-0 win.
Vietnam’s U18s are currently ranking second in Group B with three points and are just behind Australia’s U18s who are top are top after beating Cambodia 5-1. Group B’s other fixture saw Thailand drew with Singapore 1-1.
Vietnam’s U18 national football team’s next fixture will be against Australia’s U18s at 7:30pm on August 9.
