The 19-year-old swimmer’s time was within the Olympic Standard A time of 7 minutes 54.31 seconds, therefore becoming the first Vietnamese athlete to win a place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Previously, Huy Hoang had won a gold medal in the men’s 800m freestyle with a time of 7 minutes 50.20 seconds at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics which was held in Argentina.
He also grabbed a silver medal in the men’s 100m freestyle event and a bronze medal in the men’s 800m freestyle event during ASIAD 2018.
Elsewhere, Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, Vietnam’s top female swimmer, surpassed the Olympic Standard B during the women’s 400m freestyle event with a time of 4 minutes 13.35 seconds.
Despite the strong showing, Vien will have to wait on other results to see if she has done enough to earn a place at the Olympics.
Her best time at the event was 4 minutes 9.96 seconds.
There is still a chance for her to qualify automatically for the Tokyo Olympics with the swimmer set to compete in the 400 individual medley event. If she beats the Olympic Standard A time, she will secure her place in the Olympic games.
