Vietnamese players return home, bid farewell to Park Hang-seo

VOV.VN - The Vietnamese national men’s football team returned to Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi on January 17, concluding their journey at the AFF Cup 2022 and saying goodbye to their loved coach Park Hang-seo.

For five years, Park has led the Vietnamese team to achieve a number of outstanding results, including becoming AFF Cup 2018 champion, reaching the 2019 Asian Cup’s quarter-finals, finishing as the King’s Cup 2019’s runner-up, and progressing to the World Cup 2022’s third qualifying round.

The U23 team and Olympic team, under the guidance of the Korean coach, were the U23 Asian Cup 2018’s runners-up, reached the ASIAD 2018’s quarter-finals, and won gold medals at the SEA Games in both 2019 and 2021.

In addition, Vietnam stayed among the Top 100 in the FIFA men’s rankings for 1,501 days – the longest for a Southeast Asian football team.

Finishing as runners-up at the AFF Cup 2022 made Vietnam lose 1.06 points in the FIFA rankings, retaining 96th position in the world.

Park ended his contract with the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) on January 31, 2022, marking the conclusion of his five-year magical journey in Vietnam.

The first gathering of the Vietnamese team in 2023 will follow the FIFA calendar, which falls between March 20 and March 27. During this time, the VFF plans to arrange for the Vietnamese team to play a friendly match.

The debut match for the new head coach of the Vietnam national team will probably take place at the My Dinh National Stadium. Thus, the Vietnamese team will return to play at the My Dinh Stadium at the end of March under the guidance of a new coach.
