Vietnam to compete at AFF U23 Championship 2022
VOV.VN - The Vietnamese U23 national men’s football team will participate in the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) U23 Championship, with the event set to take place from February 14 to February 26, 2022, in Cambodia.
It is hoped that the tournament will allow the players to gain greater experience to prepare for the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games which will be held in the nation in May and the Asian Games (ASIAD) in China in September, 2022.
The schedule of the tournament will coincide with the return of the V.League 1 for the 2022 season, meaning that several key players such as Bui Hoang Viet Anh, Le Van Xuan, and Nguyen Van Toan will be unlikely to feature.
The competition will take place at the same time as official FIFA Days when the senior team, under the guideline of head coach Park Hang-seo, will take part in World Cup qualifiers. As a result, choosing a head coach for the Vietnam U23 squad will surely be a hard task for the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF).
At the AFF U23 Championship 2019, Vietnam succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Indonesia in the semifinals before beating hosts Cambodia to claim third place overall.
This marks the second consecutive time that Cambodia will host the AFF U23 Championship, with the event also being preparation for Cambodia to host the 32nd SEA Games in 2023.
