Vietnam retains top place, exceeds set targets at SEA Games 31

VOV.VN - Athletes scored 22 more golds for Vietnam on May 19, helping the hosts to maintain their top place in the medal table and exceed their set target of winning 140 gold medals.

Most of the gold medals were awarded to wrestlers, Karate martial artists and Track-and-Field athletes.

Vietnamese wrestlers won five golds and a silver out of six weight categories for men in the final wresting competition day. After three competition days, they have impressively bagged 17 out of 18 gold medals presented to wrestlers.

May 19 also marked the final competition day for Track-and-Field athletes, and the hosts pocketed three more golds, including one by Hoang Nguyen Thanh in the men’s 42km marathon. By securing 22 golds in all, Vietnam has taken the lead in the medal tally in Track-and-Field for the third time at SEA Games.

Karate martial artists showed off their excellent skills, bagging four golds in different weight categories for both men and women.

Other golds were clinched by athletes in other sports such as Chess, Shooting, Canoeing, Cycling, Weight-lifting, Judo, Swimming, and Taekwondo.

As of 22:30 Vietnam won a total of 153 golds, leading the medal count, leaving behind Thailand and Singapore in second and third places with 62 and 44 gold medals respectively.
