Vietnam held to goalless draw by Singapore in ASEAN Cup

VOV.VN - Defending champions Vietnam were held to a 0-0 draw by Singapore at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi on July 31 despite dominating possession and firing 22 shots, missing the chance to strengthen their position in ASEAN Cup 2026 Group A.

Vietnam controlled much of the first half and gradually increased the tempo after a cautious opening.

The hosts created sustained pressure, with quick combinations down the right flank through Truong Tien Anh and Do Hoang Hen causing problems for Singapore's defence.

Vietnam attempted 13 shots before halftime but managed only two efforts on target, with poor finishing preventing them from taking the lead.

Striker Dinh Bac had the hosts' best chances inside the penalty area but sent both volley attempts wide before leaving the pitch late in the first half through injury. He was replaced by Nguyen Tai Loc.

Vietnam continued to press after the break but struggled to convert possession into clear scoring opportunities.

The hosts failed to register a single shot on target in the second half, as Tai Loc came closest after striking the crossbar with a long-range effort.

As the match wore on, Vietnam's intensity faded as fatigue began to take its toll, allowing Singapore to grow into the contest.

The visitors created several dangerous opportunities of their own and finished the second half with more shots than the hosts.

Goalkeeper Le Giang Patrik made two crucial saves to preserve Vietnam's clean sheet, while Shawal Anuar missed Singapore's best chance by heading wide from close range.

Vietnam also struggled to sustain attacking pressure during the closing stages as Singapore defended resolutely to secure a point.

The draw leaves Vietnam facing a difficult task ahead of their away match against Indonesia.

After two matches, Kim Sang-sik's side have four points, having scored seven goals without conceding, and sit third in Group A, behind leaders Singapore on seven points and Indonesia on six.
