Vietnam climbs to 98th in FIFA rankings after ASEAN Cup 2026 victory
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s convincing ASEAN Cup 2026 title has reinforced its regional football standing while bringing a major boost as the team rises in the FIFA World Rankings.
The dramatic 2-2 draw against Thailand in the second leg of the final at My Dinh National Stadium on the evening of August 26 secured a 4-2 aggregate victory for head coach Kim Sang-sik’s squad, successfully defending their regional title.
According to calculations by football statistics site Football Ranking, the team earned an additional 9.74 points across eight matches during the ASEAN Cup 2026.
This brought Vietnam’s total points to 1,236.94, moving the team past Luxembourg from 99th to 98th globally. Vietnam also maintained 17th place in Asia and second in Southeast Asia.
The point accumulation journey demonstrates the team's consistency across matches: gaining 2.6 points from a 2-0 win over Thailand in the first leg of the final; 3.68 points from two 2-0 victories against Malaysia in the semifinals; 1.17 points from a 3-1 win over Cambodia; 2.18 points from a 3-0 victory against Indonesia; and 0.9 points from a 7-0 win over Timor Leste, while losing 0.77 points following a 0-0 draw with Singapore.
Conversely, Thailand is projected to rise one spot from 94th to 93rd after adding roughly 1.53 points, maintaining top spot in Southeast Asia and 15th in Asia despite missing out on the title.
Despite losing 2.6 points in their 2-0 first-leg final defeat to Vietnam and another 3.4 points in a 2-1 loss to Singapore in the semifinal second leg, Thailand offset those losses with group-stage and semifinal first-leg wins before drawing 2-2 in the final second leg.
Elsewhere in Southeast Asia, Singapore moved up two places to 146th globally, while other regional teams are expected to remain unchanged.
FIFA plans to officially publish the updated rankings on October 7. Team standings may still change based on upcoming international matches ahead of that date.
