Vietnam beat Afghanistan to stay unbeaten at Thailand futsal tournament

VOV.VN - Vietnam maintained their unbeaten record at the 2026 Continental Futsal Championship Thailand after defeating Afghanistan 2-1 in their third match on August 3, moving to seven points and remaining in contention for the top positions.

Facing a side (world No.21) ranked one place above them in the FIFA futsal rankings, coach Diego Giustozzi's team produced a composed display to secure their second victory of the tournament.

Vietnam made a dream start, taking the lead in the second minute. Nhan Gia Hung set up Nguyen Thinh Phat, who calmly rounded the goalkeeper before slotting the ball into an empty net.

Afghanistan responded by increasing the pressure and gradually taking control of possession, but Vietnam's defence held firm, with goalkeeper Ho Van Y producing several key saves to preserve the lead before halftime.

The second half was evenly contested, with both sides creating chances. Vietnam finally doubled their lead in the 27th minute when Thai Huy's shot from Chau Doan Phat's kick-in deflected off an Afghanistan defender and beat the goalkeeper.

Afghanistan reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in the 35th minute after Van Y fouled an opponent inside the area. However, Vietnam withstood late pressure to seal a 2-1 victory.

The win moved Vietnam to seven points from three matches, keeping them in contention with Thailand and Russia at the top of the standings.

Vietnam will face hosts Thailand in their final match on August 5, the toughest test of the tournament and an important benchmark ahead of upcoming international competitions.
