Tuan Minh becomes 13th Vietnamese chess Grandmaster

VOV.VN - Le Tuan Minh has become the nation’s 13th chess Grandmaster (GM) after winning the championship title in the standard event played at the 2022 World Open on July 4 in Philadelphia in the United States.

The local player earned a total of seven points after nine matches, losing no games in the process. He took on four GMs at the tournament, as well as opponents coming from more than three different federations, with these conditions thereby helping the Vietnamese player to be awarded the title of Grandmaster.

The 2022 World Open chess tournament took place from June 30 to July 4 in the US, with the event attracting the participation of 225 players. By claiming the championship title in the standard event, Tuan Minh added 13.3 points to his current Elo tally of 2,527.

He has therefore become the second Vietnamese player to win the World Open. Previously, GM Le Quang Liem had been the winner of the chess tournament back in 2019.

Being a GM is the highest title awarded to a chess player by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), with a GM able to keep the title for the rest of their life, unless it’s stripped for cheating.

Another name for this title is International Grandmaster, although it is rarely used today. The GM title was first awarded by FIDE in 1950 to 27 players.
