Thao Nguyen takes bronze at Asian Women's Rapid Chess Championships
VOV.VN - Vietnamese chess player Pham Le Thao Nguyen has brought home a bronze medal at the Asian Open and Women's Rapid Chess Championships 2026 that closed in Hong Kong (China) on July 29.
In the women's rapid category, Thao Nguyen scored eight points from 11 games to secure the bronze medal.
Indian Grandmaster Harika Dronavalli claimed the gold with 8.5 points, while Russian Grandmaster Anna Shukhman took silver after finishing level on points but ahead on tiebreaks.
In the Open division, Russia’s Aleksey Grebnev was crowned the Asian rapid chess champion with 8.5 points. The second and third positions went to India’s Krishna Goutham and Ilia Rusia’s Iljiushenok, respectively.
The tournament attracted 178 players from 13 countries and territories, competing over 11 rounds. The players will continue to compete in the Asian Blitz Championships taking place on July 30.
Earlier this month, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) named Vietnam the best-performing team at the 2026 Asian Youth Chess Championships in Shenzhen, China, where the delegation won six gold medals out of a total of 11 medals.
The most outstanding player was Truong Phuc Nhat Nguyen, who won the Boys' U8 category with 8 points from 9 rounds. FIDE hailed this as the most convincing victory in the tournament's standard chess.
