Son defeated as Liem grabs win at Hunan International Chess Open

After enjoying a number of impressive results with two wins and two draws, Son, Elo rating 2636, could not pull off a surprise against his strong Chinese opponent Wang Hao, Elo rating 2725, in the fifth match on August 2. The Chinese player used the advantage of holding the white pawn to beat Son after 48 moves.

The Vietnamese player fell to Group 3 in the rankings as a result of the loss.

Elsewhere, after recording four draws against low-ranked opponents in his previous matches, Le Quang Liem, Elo rating 2713, enjoyed his first win of the tournament as he defeated Chinese player Peng Xiongjian, Elo rating 2467, after 41 moves.

In the tournament’s sixth round of fixtures, Son is scheduled to play Li Di of China, Elo rating 2523, while Liem will face Megaranto Susanto of Indonesia, Elo rating 2545.
