Quang Ninh eyes World Amateur Golfers Championship Finals bid

The MoU was signed on August 5 between Quang Ninh authorities and WAGC representatives, marking the beginning of a feasibility study into bringing one of the world's largest amateur golf events to Vietnam.

Founded in 1995, the WAGC is among the world's most prestigious amateur golf tournament systems, attracting players from more than 50 countries and territories each year. Beyond competition, the championship also serves as a platform for business networking and international tourism promotion.

A step toward a global golf destination

According to WAGC organisers, Quang Ninh was identified as a strong potential host after assessments of its transport infrastructure, internationally certified golf courses, luxury accommodation and extensive experience in staging large-scale international events.

WAGC President Isac Saminathan described the signed document as more than the first step toward evaluating Quang Ninh's hosting capability. He said the partnership also opens the door to long-term cooperation in golf tourism and international sporting events.

This collaboration is expected to provide memorable experiences for golfers, promote Quang Ninh as a leading international golf destination, and showcase Vietnam's natural beauty and cultural heritage to the world, he said.

Driving golf tourism and the events economy

Home to UNESCO World Heritage site Ha Long Bay, the Yen Tu spiritual complex and a growing collection of international-standard golf courses and luxury resorts, Quang Ninh has increasingly positioned tourism and sports events as complementary drivers of economic growth.

Le Ngoc Thanh, director of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, stated the province views the potential hosting of the 2027 WAGC World Finals as part of its broader strategy to develop sports tourism, the events economy and cultural industries.

Attracting golfers, business leaders and international investors through world-class sporting events would help strengthen Quang Ninh's reputation as a destination capable of hosting major international gatherings while enhancing Vietnam's profile on the global sports and tourism map, he said.

According to Thanh, the MoU marks the beginning of a new phase of cooperation between Quang Ninh and WAGC.

The province will work closely with tournament organisers, relevant authorities and businesses to study the technical, logistical and operational requirements for hosting the 2027 World Finals in accordance with international standards.

If successful, the event would further reinforce Quang Ninh's ambition to become one of Asia's leading golf tourism destinations and expand Vietnam's presence in the global sports events industry.
