Quang Liem progresses to semi-finals of Banter Series

VOV.VN - Local chess player Le Quang Liem recorded a resounding victory over Fabiano Caruana, second in the global rankings, on September 26 to make it through to the semi-finals of the Banter Series online chess tournament.

Liem was able to beat Fabiano Caruana with a score of 5.5-3.5 after nine sets.

The latest win by Liem comes after he enjoyed a surprise victory over Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan, the 2019 Chess World Cup winner, to make it to the quarter-finals.

Looking ahead to the semi-finals, Liem will face Wesley So. Originally born in the Philippines, the American has an Elo ranking of 2,770 and was able to beat Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France 6-4 in the quarter-finals. 

The Banter Series online chess tournament first opened on September 22 and is due to finish on September 28. The event involves the participation of the world’s leading chess players, including Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Teimour Radjabov, and Anish Giri.

The total prize money on offer is up to US$36,000, including US$14,000 which will be awarded to the champion.
