Quang Liem into semifinals of Chessable Masters

VOV.VN - Le Quang Liem, the nation’s leading chess player, has made it through to the semifinals of the Chessable Masters online rapid tournament.

During the quarterfinal stage which was held online on August 4, world No.32 Quang Liem took on Alireza Firouzja, France’s top player and world No.12.

The Vietnamese player enjoyed a surprise victory over his French rival and recorded two wins in a row. The result ensured that Quang Liem will progress straight to the semifinals without completing the remaining two sets thanks to his comfortable 3-1 victory on the first day. Due to this lead, even if he lost the remaining two sets he would still earn a ticket in the next round.

Moving forward, Quang Liem will face off against Levon Aronian of Armenia, currently ranked as the world’s fifth strongest player and winner of the FIDE World Cup in both 2005 and 2017, in the semifinals.

The Chessable Masters represents the eighth event of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, a 10-month long series of 10 chess tournaments initiated by chess king Magnus Carlsen of Norway and played online through Chess24.com.

Quang Liem earned at least US$6,500 in bonuses as he has made it through to the semifinals of the tournament.
