PM Phuc congratulates Vietnamese women's football team
VOV.VN - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc extended his congratulations to Vietnam’s national women's football team following their victory in the ASEAN Football Federation Championship in Thailand on August 27.
The team recorded a 1-0 win in the final over defending champions Thailand, who last month made their debut at the FIFA World Cup in France. The only goal of the game was scored by captain Huynh Nhu in the 93rd minute.
In his letter of congratulations, PM Phuc lavished the team with praise following their displays of determination and bravery throughout the tournament, before going on to wish the squad good fortune in future tournaments.
During the AFF competition, the Vietnamese team recorded a total of nine points, scoring 21 goals, and not conceding throughout the entire tournament. The latest win is their third in the tournament’s history, after winning the competition in 2006 and 2012.
Tran Quoc Tuan, vice president of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), said the victory would serve to give the footballers a confidence boost ahead of the 30th Southeast Asian Games and the upcoming 2020 Asian zone Olympic qualifiers.
The team were awarded a cash bonus of up to VND1.3 billion by the VFF. In addition to their win bonus, the team were also awarded VND500 million by Nguyen Ngoc Thien, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, who is also President of the Vietnam Olympic Committee, for their success.
