Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly wins Vietnam’s only gold at Asian karate championships
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s karate team wrapped up the 22nd AKF Asian Senior Karate Championship 2026 in Indonesia, with one gold medal and five bronze medals, finishing seventh overall.
The team’s standout performance came from Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly, who won gold in the women’s kumite 68kg event on the final day of competition on June 21.
Dieu Ly’s gold was also Vietnam’s only title at this year’s tournament, helping the team achieve its pre-tournament goal of winning gold.
In the women’s team kumite event, Vietnam, represented by Dinh Thi Huong, Hoang Thi My Tam, Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly and Nguyen Thi Thu, claimed bronze after missing out on a place in the final. The result was a disappointment for the team, which had won three consecutive Asian titles from 2023 to 2025.
Meanwhile, Vietnam’s women’s team kata squad failed to secure a medal after losing to Iran in the second round.
The 22nd AKF Asian Senior Karate Championship 2026 marked Vietnam’s first international tournament since the 33rd SEA Games and served as an important preparation event for the 20th Asian Games.
Japan topped the medal table with five gold, three silver and five bronze medals, while Iran and Kazakhstan finished second and third, respectively.
