Local swimmers fail to progress to final round of 2020 Tokyo Paralympics

VOV.VN - Vietnamese swimmer Trinh Thi Bich Nhu was eliminated from the women’s 50m freestyle S6 on the first day of the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics in Japan on August 25.

The event witnessed the participation of a total of 16 athletes, with the top eight among them progressing through to the final round.

Bich Nhu failed to make it past the qualifiers after recording a time of 39s14. The leading position went to Elizabeth Marks of the United States with a time of 33s16, setting a new Paralympic record in the process.

Later on the same day Nhu’s teammate Vo Thanh Tung also failed to go through to the final round after he finished his competition in the men’s 200m freestyle S5 with a time of 3’14s11.

Elsewhere, medal hopeful Le Van Cong, who won the country’s first Paralympic gold medal in weightlifting back in the 2016 Rio games, is scheduled to compete in the men’s 49kg category on August 26.

The Paralympic Games are due to last until September 5 and will feature the participation of 4,403 athletes from around the world who will compete in 539 events across 22 different sports.

Vietnam has sent a 15-member contingent to compete in Tokyo, including seven athletes competing in swimming, weightlifting, and track-and-field.
