Liem and Son record draws at FIDE Grand Swiss competition

Talented Vietnamese chess players Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son have both been held to draws in the fourth round of the FIDE Grand Swiss 2019 chess tournament which is currently taking place in England.

The fourth round tie concluded early this morning with Liem, Elo rating 2708, drawing with Andrei Volokitin of Ukraine, Elo rating 2627, after 32 moves.

With a record of four draws in a row, Liem has so far only earned two points and is currently trailing the leading group by 1.5 points.

As the nation’s top chess player, Liem will next face Aryan Tari of Norway, Elo rating 2630, in the competition’s fifth round match.

Elsewhere, Truong Son, Elo rating 2638, was also held by his Indian rival Puranik, Elo rating 2571, and currently has a record of two points from four matches.

His next fixture is scheduled to be against Ahmed Adly of Egypt, Elo rating 2636.

With both Vietnamese grandmasters looking to win the tournament, both will require a breakthrough in their next matches if they want to have any hope of doing so.
