Le Quang Liem finishes fourth at Biel Masters Triathlon 2026
VOV.VN - Vietnamese grandmaster Le Quang Liem has finished fourth overall at the 2026 Biel GMT Masters Triathlon international chess tournament in Switzerland.
After nearly two weeks of competition across multiple formats, Le amassed 24 points. He topped the standard standings with 15.5 points, but managed only 4 points in rapid and 4.5 points in blitz.
Yagiz Erdogmus of Turkey also scored 24 points but edged out the Vietnamese grandmaster on tiebreaks. Aydin Suleymanli of Azerbaijan took second with 25.5 points, while US grandmaster Levon Aronian claimed the title with 29.5 points.
Liem's tournament-leading performance in the standard chess is expected to earn him a one-point Elo gain when FIDE releases its next world rankings next month.
The six-player field featured Le Quang Liem, Levon Aronian, Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, Matthias Bluebaum, José Martínez and Aydin Suleymanli. They competed in Chess960, rapid, blitz and standard formats, with the combined results determining the final standings. It was Liem's fourth appearance at the Biel Masters Triathlon.
Earlier this month, Le finished runner-up at the 2026 Leon Masters in Spain, missing the chance to defend his title. Later this year, he will serve as head coach of the US women's team at the 2026 Chess Olympiad.
