Khuong Duy wins Masters title at International Master-Grandmaster Chess Tournament

The first stage concluded on June 30 following a dramatic final round. Players competed in 10 standard rounds under the Swiss system. In the 10th and final round, Dau Khuong Duy defeated Chernyavsky Alexander of Russia to finish with 7.5 points.

He remained unbeaten throughout with five wins and five draws to secure the Masters title, although he narrowly missed earning an additional Grandmaster norm. He will have another opportunity to pursue the norm in the tournament’s second leg.

Vietnamese player Banh Gia Huy also missed out on a Grandmaster norm after placing second with seven points, finishing unbeaten with four wins and six draws in 10 rounds. Grandmaster Visakh N R of India took third overall with seven points.

Vietnam also received good news as Nguyen Hong Nhung secured a Woman International Master norm after scoring 5.5 points in 10 rounds, placing second among female players.

In the blitz event, Grandmaster Priasmoro Novendra of Indonesia claimed the title after 11 rounds, while Vietnam’s best result came from Dinh Nho Kiet, who placed third.

This year’s tournament attracted 140 players, including nine Grandmasters, 15 International Masters, 15 FIDE Masters and nine Candidate Masters, competing in both standard and blitz events.

The second stage will run from July 2-7, featuring Grandmaster, International Master and FIDE Master sections.

Results from the tournament will be submitted to the International Chess Federation (FIDE) for Grandmaster and International Master norm calculations, as well as Elo rating updates in August 2026.
