Karate artists win first gold for Vietnam at SEA Games
VOV.VN - Vietnamese karate artists have consecutively won two gold medals in the women's and men's team kata category to bring home the first gold medals for the Vietnamese sporting delegation on the first day of the 32nd SEA Games on May 6.
The wins saw local female karate fighters Nguyen Thi Phuong, Luu Thi Thu Uyen, and Nguyen Ngoc Tram defeat their Indonesian opponent with 41.2 points to secure victory in the final of the women's team kata event.
Elsewhere, Le Hong Phuc, Pham Minh Duc, and Giang Viet Anh also snatched gold in the men's team kata category with 41 points to beat the Indonesian team with 30.8 points.
Meanwhile, martial artist Le Thi Hien defeated 7-0 against Alisa Panyasily of Laos in the final to win a gold medal in the women's 55kg event in Vovinam. This is also the first individual gold medal of the Vietnamese sports delgation at the 32nd SEA Games.
The Vietnamese sporting delegation consists of a total of 1,003 members, including 702 athletes competing across 31 sports. They are aiming to win between 90 to 120 gold medals to achieve a top three finish in the final medal table.
