Gold targets in sight as Sepak Takraw World Championship begins in Thailand
VOV.VN - National team players from Vietnam departed for Thailand on August 2 to compete in the 2026 King’s Cup World Championship, aiming to test their form ahead of the 20th Asian Games (ASIAD 20).
Coaching staff confirmed that the tournament, taking place from August 4 to 11 in Bangkok, serves as a key test to evaluate player performance and gauge main continental rivals.
Vietnam has fielded its core national squad, targeting top podium finishes in primary events, with high expectations placed on the men’s and women’s quad (4-player) categories.
On the women’s side, head coach Tran Thi Vui’s team will compete in the regu, quad, and doubles events. In the women’s quad, Vietnam was drawn into Group A alongside China, Laos, and Iraq. The team will also face China and Sri Lanka in the regu group stage.
The men’s squad will enter the team regu, regu, and quad events, while opting out of the hoop discipline. In the men’s quad, Vietnam joins Group B alongside India, Iraq, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
Now in its 39th edition, the King’s Cup has drawn all major contenders preparing for the upcoming Asian Games, including host nation Thailand, who have named their strongest lineup.

Vietnamese athletes are in Malaysia and ready to compete at the International Sepaktakraw (rattan ball kicking) Federation World Cup from May 18 to 26 at the Titiwangsa Stadium, Kuala Lumpur.
