First gold medal for Vietnam at 2026 IWUF Taolu World Cup
VOV.VN - Wushu martial artist Duong Thuy Vi on July 8 brought home the first gold medal for Vietnam at the 2026 IWUF Taolu World Cup which is taking place in Haikou city, China.
In the women’s qiangshu, the 33-year-old delivered a technically refined and highly accurate performance to earn 9.746 points, securing the top spot on the podium.
She edged out Malaysia's Pang Pui Yee, who scored 9.726 points, and Kazakhstan's Aksiniia Schukina, who finished third with 9.723 points.
The victory marked Vi’s first-ever World Cup title after previously finishing with silver medals at the 2016 and 2024 editions.
Earlier, on the opening day of competition in China on July 7, Vi bagged a bronze medal in the women's jianshu.
The 2026 IWUF Taolu World Cup has attracted 117 athletes from 29 countries and territories. Organised by the International Wushu Federation, the competition features only athletes who achieved outstanding results at the most recent World Wushu Championships.
Martial artists vie for 22 sets of medals on offer across men’s and women’s categories including changquan, nanquan, taijiquan, jianshu, daoshu, taijijian, nandao, and qiangshu.
Vietnam is represented by three athletes at this year's competition, with Duong Thuy Vi the team's most experienced member. The tournament expects to hep athletes to prepare for the 20th Asian Games (ASIAD 20) scheduled to take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, this September.
