Asian volleyball championship draw pairs Vietnamese women with Japan, RoK
VOV.VN - Vietnam has been placed in Group C of the 2026 AVC Women's Volleyball Continental Championship alongside Japan, the Republic of Korea (RoK), and Hong Kong (China), following the official draw conducted by the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) on July 28.
The 12-team tournament will take place in China from August 21 to 30, comprising China (hosts), Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Kazakhstan, Chinese Taipei, the RoK, Iran, Hong Kong (China), Australia, Indonesia, and Iraq. Vietnam entered the draw as the reigning 2025 AVC Cup champions.
In Group C, Vietnam (ranked 28th globally) will compete against world No. 6 Japan, the RoK (30th), and Hong Kong, China (108th). Group A includes host China, Chinese Taipei, Iran, and Iraq, while Group B consists of Thailand, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, and Australia.
The continental tournament carries high stakes, with the champion earning direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Furthermore, the top three teams will secure berths at the 2027 World Championship. Vietnam previously made its historic debut at the 2025 World Championship in Thailand.
Having achieved a program-best fourth-place finish at the 2023 Asian Championship, Vietnam aims to defend its semi-final standing in this year's edition.
Head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet is currently training a 28-player preliminary squad ahead of two legs at the 2026 SEA V.Cup in Vietnam and Thailand, starting July 31. Following the regional tournament, the coaching staff will select a 14-player final roster for the championship in China.
