WWF campaign aims to reduce plastic waste

VOV.VN - The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has recently launched a communication campaign which calls on people to reduce ocean plastic waste.

The primary aim of the WWF’s campaign is to raise each individual’s responsibility for reducing plastic waste, especially single-use plastics, and promote sustainable consumption habits for plastic products in daily life. It  also targets a new generation of consumers across the country, including those residing in coastal areas.

During the campaign, environmental messages are being deployed in a fresh approach through folklore materials, including posters, funny proverbs, rap music, and other genres of folk music.

Famous local people such as YouTube creator Nhat Anh Trang, MC Quang Minh, journalist Hoang Anh Tu, journalist Le Quoc Vinh, and translator Nguyen Dinh Thanh are expected to join the campaign to help raise community awareness about the need to reduce plastic waste in daily life.

Nguyen Thi Dieu Thuy, plastic programme director of WWF Vietnam, expressed her hope that the campaign will help consumers, especially young consumers, gain greater insights into plastic pollution and take actions to change the current status, while creating a trend to reduce plastic from firms that supply plastics products.

Plastic waste contributes to increasing greenhouse gas emissions, exerting a negative impact on climate change, and threatening the survival of marine life, while simultaneously degrading the coral population and affecting the marine microbial system.

According to statistics released by the World Bank, Vietnam is estimated to have generated over 31 million tonnes of household waste and roughly five million tonnes of plastic waste in 2018 alone.
