Vietnamese nationals in Sydney gather for lunar New Year celebration

VOV.VN - The Consulate General of Vietnam in Sydney hosted a get-together on January 30 for overseas Vietnamese (OV) to celebrate the traditional Lunar New Year festival (Tet).

On display were various stalls offering rustic and typical dishes of the north, central, and southern regions in Vietnam, including fried spring rolls, Chung (glutinous rice) cake and different types of confectioneries, and Vietnamese noodle soup, more commonly known as Pho.

Addressing the event, Nguyen Dang Thang, consul general of Vietnam in New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia highlighted the contributions made by Vietnamese expatriates in Australia to the COVID-19 fight in the homeland.

Thang emphasise that bilateral relations between Vietnam and Australia have grown well across multiple fields, with total trade turnover between the two countries reaching roughly US$12.4 billion last year despite the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Most notably, the past year saw both sides sign an enhanced economic engagement strategy aimed at strengthening economic connectivity and further promoting trade and investment goals, he added.

The Vietnamese diplomat therefore expressed his hope that the resumption of regular commercial flights to Australia will serve to contribute to accelerating trade and exchange between the two countries.
