Vietnam seeks stronger cooperation with WIPO

VOV.VN - A Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui The Duy is attending the 65th of Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) which is underway from July 9 to July 10 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The event features the participation of more 1,400 stakeholders, including nearly 20 ministers and deputy ministers from 191 member states and observers globally.

Upon addressing the event, Deputy Minister Duy congratulated WIPO on its outstanding achievements recorded in relation to institution building work, particularly the adoption of the WIPO Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge in May and the upcoming convening of a diplomatic conference to ratify the Design Law Treaty (DLT) next November.

As part of his speech, Deputy Minister Duy stated that the has issued the National IP Strategy until 2030, which incentivizes all stakeholders in society to engage in IP activities, with businesses playing a central role in this.

He also announced that for the first time, the country has successfully built and published the 2023 local innovation index report.

On the sidelines of event, the Deputy Minister held a working session with Daren Tang, director general of WIPO, during which he briefed on the major policies of the Vietnamese Party and State on science, technology, innovation, and intellectual property.

Thanking WIPO for its valuable support given to his Ministry in calculating the local innovation index, developing the National Intellectual Property Strategy, and other important projects, he outlined his hope that in the time ahead, the organisation will expand ties with Vietnam to other areas, such as studies on the relationship between IP protection and innovations created by artificial intelligence (AI).

In response, the WIPO leader congratulated the nation on its recent socio-economic development achievements, hailing the country’s steady advancements recorded in the global innovation index ranking. He also highlighted the nation as one of the few countries in the world to have published a local innovation index report.

He affirmed his organisation’s readiness to co-operate with the nation in new areas as suggested by the Vietnamese official.
