Vietnam border guards seize 392 suspected fake US$100 banknotes

VOV.VN - A man has been detained in northern Vietnam after border guards found 392 suspected counterfeit US$100 banknotes in his possession while he was traveling from the border area into Vietnam, authorities said on September 1.

At around 1 a.m. on September 1, personnel from the Professional Division of the Lang Son Border Guard Command, working with the Chi Ma Border Guard Station, spotted a motorcyclist leaving the Chi Ma border gate along Provincial Road 236 under suspicious circumstances.

The man was stopped for inspection, and inside a pink plastic bag he was carrying, authorities found four bundles containing 392 US$100 banknotes, with a total face value of US$39,200.

The money is currently being verified, with authorities suspecting that the bills are counterfeit.

The man was identified as Tran Van Phuc, born in 1988 and residing in Chi Ma Village, Lang Son Province. Phuc and the seized items were taken to the Chi Ma Border Guard Station for further investigation.

According to his initial statement, Phuc was contacted on August 29 by a Chinese national named A Sinh, who allegedly hired him to travel to the area near Border Marker 1227 in Chi Ma Village to collect four bundles of suspected counterfeit US dollars.

After receiving the money, Phuc was allegedly instructed to transport it to the Hu Mu area and hand it over to a man named Trung.

He reportedly told investigators that he was promised VND5 million for the delivery.

The Professional Division of the Lang Son Border Guard Command is coordinating with relevant agencies to verify the origin of the money, identify those involved and handle the case in accordance with the law.
