Vietnam arrests 5 for trafficking baby boy to China

The arrestees are four women and one of their husbands, between 25 and 44 years old.

Police said they caught one suspect on August 24 when she was carrying the 20-day-old boy on a boat crossing a river at the border to Guangxi. Hien’s statements led them to others.

Investigation so far found the members asked to adopt the baby in Ho Chi Minh City by paying the mother a little money.

Then they brought him to China where a Vietnamese woman had promised to pay them VND40-50 million (US$1,780-2,226) for each baby boy.

One member told police that the woman, only identified as Hoa, had told them to look for mothers who just delivered baby boys and did not want to raise them.

China has a long-standing cultural preference for boys as men are expected to carry on their family names and traditions.
