Two Lao nationals arrested for smuggling firecrackers into Vietnam
VOV.VN - Two Lao nationals have been arrested for illegally transporting 633kg of firecrackers and 35 synthetic drug pills from across the border into Vietnam, the Border Guard Command of the central province of Quang Tri said on August 3.
According to local authorities, border guards and customs officers stopped and inspected a Lao-registered tractor-trailer at Kilometer 869 of the Ho Chi Minh Highway in Tuyen Lam commune after it entered Vietnam from Laos.
During the inspection, officers discovered 484 boxes of fireworks, weighing a total of 633 kilograms, concealed inside the vehicle. Both suspects are residents of Khammouane province, Laos.
Authorities also seized 35 synthetic drug pills.
The two suspects told investigators they had been hired to transport the fireworks from Laos into Vietnam for illegal distribution. They claimed the drugs were intended for personal use during the journey.
The border guard has directed competent agencies to expand the investigation, identify others involved, and complete legal procedures for handling the case in accordance with Vietnamese law.
