The Southern Bangkok Criminal Court began the second proceedings against Vo Van Duc on April 30 on the charge of bombing the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand in June 2001.

After presenting evidence and material to defend Duc, his lawyer Worasit Piriyawiboon cited article 11 of the Thai Panel Procedures Code claiming that Duc could not be brought to court for the second time in Thailand as he had faced trial on similar charges in the US.

However, the jury board turned down the lawyer’s arguments, saying that his explanation is unclear and that the plaintiff side still lacks convincing legal evidence. The board asked the plaintiff side to gather sufficient evidence to defend their arguments at the third criminal proceedings on June 29, 2007.

The first court proceedings took place on April 9, 2007.

Duc, who carried out a terrorist bombing at the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand on June 19, 2001, was arrested in the US four months later. On the request from Thailand, the US agreed to extradite Duc to Thailand for trial in December 2006. The spokesperson of the Vietnam Foreign Ministry welcomed the US decision and affirmed that Duc was the ringleader of the bombing.

The trial is expected to last for months.
