Vietnam is likely to join a vast majority of countries to be seriously affected by global climate change and rising sea levels, the Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment warned at a national forum on global climate change held in Hanoi on May 3.

Climate change means the country will face increasingly strong storms, heavy rains, high temperatures and droughts, according to the institute.

Vietnam has faced droughts in 34 out of the past 46 years, said Nguyen Dinh Ninh, Vice Director of the Water Resources Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

Participants at the forum, jointly organized by the MARD, Oxfam and the Vietnam Red Cross, also discussed measures to mitigate the impact of drought as well as ways to help people adapt to severe weather conditions.
