Road construction suspended in Lao Cai after 500kg bomb found

The bomb was discovered at around 9 a.m. on July 8 during construction of the Bao Ha–Hong Bun service road in Bao Ha commune.

According to local authorities, workers spotted a large metal object buried beneath the ground along an uphill embankment. A preliminary inspection indicated that it was a wartime bomb weighing approximately 500 kilograms.

Construction activities were immediately suspended, and the discovery was reported to local authorities and military officers.

Leaders of Bao Ha commune and the commune’s Military Command quickly arrived at the scene, cordoning off the site, installing warning signs and implementing safety measures to protect nearby residents and passing vehicles.

The local administration also requested support from higher-level military authorities, who will deploy explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) specialists to examine and safely remove the bomb in accordance with established procedures.

The site remains under strict security, and residents have been advised to stay away from the area and follow instructions from the authorities while disposal operations are underway.

Unexploded ordnance left over from past conflicts continues to be discovered during infrastructure construction and after heavy rainfall in various parts of Vietnam.

This is not the first time unexploded wartime ordnance has been found in Lao Cai. Similar discoveries have been made during construction projects and following periods of heavy rain, with military teams safely disposing of bombs weighing several hundred kilograms.

Provincial authorities said around 2,700 hectares of land across Lao Cai are still considered at risk of containing unexploded bombs, mines and other explosive remnants of war, underscoring the need for continued clearance efforts alongside infrastructure development.
