Quang Tri eyes broader cooperation with United States

The direction was highlighted at a meeting on August 25 between Chairman of the Quang Tri provincial People’s Committee Le Hong Vinh and US Ambassador to Vietnam Jennifer Wicks during her working visit to the province.

Vinh introduced Quang Tri’s development priorities following its administrative restructuring, identifying energy, green and clean agriculture, tourism and logistics as key areas for development.

The province also called for support in connecting with US agencies, organisations and businesses in areas of mutual interest, including education, human resource development, health care, digital transformation, clean energy, climate-change adaptation, high-tech agriculture and sustainable livelihoods.

Vinh said Quang Tri still faces the long-term task of addressing war legacies, including unexploded ordnance, while seeking to create a safe investment environment and turn its emerging strengths into concrete cooperation opportunities.

War legacy remediation remains a foundation

For the United States, cooperation in addressing war legacies is an important part of its engagement with Quang Tri.

Ambassador Wicks said she hopes to continue strengthening cooperation with Quang Tri during her tenure and promoting projects to address the consequences of war.

The United States has supported efforts to clear mines and unexploded ordnance and address environmental issues in the province. Quang Tri has also asked for continued US support in mine clearance, mine-risk education, assistance for war victims and capacity building for specialised agencies.

Wicks also said the United States would continue to work with Vietnam on the “500-day” campaign to search for, recover and identify the remains of fallen soldiers, alongside sharing additional technology and expertise.

The Ambassador’s visit also included a tribute at the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel, where she and members of the delegation paid their respects to those who died during the war.

The continuing work to address war legacies has therefore become not only a humanitarian issue but also part of the foundation for broader cooperation between Vietnam and the United States.

From war legacy remediation to new development opportunities

As the province continues to address the consequences of war, it is also looking to build new areas of cooperation that support long-term development.

Quang Tri wants to make better use of the opportunities created by the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, particularly in areas linked to technology, clean energy, digital transformation and high-tech agriculture.

The province has also identified tourism and logistics among its strategic development priorities, creating potential for broader economic and investment links with US partners.

For the United States, Wicks highlighted the importance of strengthening trade, economic development and people-to-people ties between the two countries.

She also praised Quang Tri’s participation in the Pacific Partnership and Pacific Friendship programmes in June 2026, which contributed to cooperation between the two countries while strengthening Vietnam’s capacity in emergency response and disaster preparedness.

Meanwhile, Vinh said Quang Tri hopes the Ambassador will continue to learn more about the province and return for further discussions on specific economic and development projects.
