The People’s Committee of central Quang Nam province plans to submit Cu Lao Cham archipelago to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for recognition as a world biosphere reserve.

Cu Lao Cham consists of eight islands 25 nautical miles offshore from Hoi An town. These are home to a great diversity of marine life, including 135 species of coral, 500 species of seaweed, more than 200 species of fish, four varieties of tiger prawns and 84 types of mollusc.

Archaeological studies also found traces of ancient people in Cu Lao Cham area. The remains are more than 3,000 years old.
