Over 300 medical workers from foreign countries have come to Vietnam to learn the thyroid laparoscopy technique invented by Director of the National Hospital of Endocrinology Associate Professor Dr. Tran Ngoc Luong.
So far, Professor Luong and his partners have carried out 5,381 thyroid laparoscopy operations.
He has been lately honored by the Vietnam Records Organization (VietKings) as a physician whose thyroid laparoscopy surgery are the most applied, transferred and trained at home and abroad.
Dr. Luong is a leading expert in endoscopic surgery to treat thyroid pathology. His surgical method is to carry out endoscopic surgery through small incisions on the armpit and chest , ranging from 0.5 to 1 cm, which would disappear after a few months and can be completely covered by clothing.
This method applies to all different pathologies of the thyroid gland, such as goiter, Basedow disease and thyroid cancer. The perceived superiority of the technology is to be able to operate on large bumps without having to cut any neck muscles.
In term of economy, the technique is time-saving and more economical than available techniques in the world.
For instance, a thyroid laparoscopy surgery carried out in the Republic of Korea or Singapore takes two hours with the cost of $8,000-10,000 whereas it takes 20 minutes at the cost of $300-400 in Vietnam’s National Hospital of Endocrinology.
